Studios
Recording studios can be used for many different purposes -- most of which will be to do with recording sound in some form or other. Some people will find that setting up a simple home recording studio will meet their needs whether they are looking to make recordings for fun or for commercial purposes -- today’s digital technology can make this achievable and affordable.
In many cases, however, people who need to record something for commercial purposes or who need more space to do so will use a recording studio. A band, for example, may use this kind of business to record an album over a period of time. Animated films are given their voiceover track in studios. These kinds of studios aren’t simply used for music recording, however. They can be used to record radio plays, audio books, general voiceovers and TV and radio jingles.
The advantage to using a studio to make a recording is that the room or rooms in which the recording will be performed will be specially designed from an acoustic perspective. If you make a recording at home, for example, then it may be hard to get the right acoustics and you may have issues with background noise. This won’t be an issue with recording studios which have been set up to work to optimum effect.
If you are making a recording in a studio then the room in which you will ‘perform’ will usually be separate to the room in which the recording is made. This simply allows you to do what you need to do and to allow the people recording, mixing and editing your stuff to do their thing without interrupting you. They may, after all, need to talk which they couldn’t do if they were based in the same room as you. There will usually be some form of intercom link so that they can talk to you if necessary.
The studio is where the performance work is done. The size of studios will vary from studio to studio. Some will have a variety of rooms for this use of varying sizes whilst others may simply have one simple recording room. In some cases a variety of studios may be used to make one simple recording. So, for example, a band may record the music for a song in one studio but the singer may lay down his/her vocals in another one. It is the norm for all studios within a building to have their own control rooms.
